A more cinematic Descendants flick

As is it so with the other Desecendants movies, the singing and dancing are very familiar. Even the singing voices and cadences sound the same. The message of preventing evil by preventing bullying is a standard Disney message that always gives positive vibes. I always feel the need to check this site for any snuck-in self-destructive ideas that have been a problem in kids' shows as of late. I can attest that there is nothing concerning in this movie that doesn't later resolve itself through the course of the movie. I will not add a spoiler about the unexpected cameo appearance. Just watch it and see if you get it! My kids love the Descendants movies and songs, and this one came in their tween years, so I'm not sure they adored it as much as they used to, but I can still see they enjoyed it.

Innuendo isn't for kids

Easter eggs, nostalgia, agenda-free

To say we needed a movie like this is an understatement. I hope other creators of children’s movies take note. (Ahem, Disney.) As a 40-something mom, I was pleased with how creative the comedy writers were with this movie, as they did not have to add any gross innuendo “to keep the parents entertained.” The comedy definitely had a nostalgic touch, allowing adults who grew up on NES and SNES be able to really feel “seen” while also being super entertaining and hilarious for the kiddos. And c’mon, Jack Black really is an underrated actor. His catchy song in the movie is true to his Tenacious D roots, full of goofy lyrics and over-the-top growling. Great job on this clean and fun flick.

An adorable, agenda-free, movie for kids

Super cute movie with no agenda or lecturing. The acting and dialogue was spectacular. Characters working together, finding the good in one another.

Activism/Radicalism themes

The show has themes about activism, same-sex crushes, and compelled speech (they/them pronouns.) Glad Disney + put this on the more mature profiles, but just be aware of what you may have to explain to your kids.

Talks about spousal infidelity

The show has a very strong discussion about the king's infidelity. Those topics are a bit too deep for kids.

Too much violence and anger to be rated "G"

Extremely high-strung character behaviors (angst, anger, fear, yelling, grouchiness, impatience, etc...) Lots of violence (fires, angry mobs, dangerous scenarios, etc...) I'm annoyed that Disney + has this show rated "G."

A great nightly show to get our family together for every day.

Love watching this with my school-aged kids, but just be prepared to discuss differences in cultures and family lifestyles when they introduce the contestants.

Too many adult themes

A lot of fake cursing, using puns in place of the real expletives. Also, there’s some strong sexuality, very Jessica Rabbit-esque, from one of the female characters, Lola. She also tries to seduce the main character. It’s pretty gratuitous for a supposed kid’s show.
